An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

CPA and Tax Attorney have an additional level of credibility and expertise. A CPA is an accountant who has passed certain examinations and met all other statutory and licensing requirements of a state to be certified by that state. In addition to preparing and reviewing financial statements, CPAs also prepare tax returns for businesses and individuals, sign tax returns, and represent taxpayers before the IRS for audits and other matters.

The electronic return originator, ERO, is a person or business that originates federal income tax returns electronically for the Internal Revenue Service, IRS. The IRS requires application and approval to be an ERO. Upon approval, the IRS identifies the ERO by an EFIN, or electronic filer identification number. With our tax preparation software, the ERO can send federal tax information to the IRS.
I was able to start my own virtual tax business without any huge investment in time or money. The TaxTC ERO membership fee is very reasonable, especially considering the free marketing products. TaxTC offers some serious goodies and great customer support.
Note: A valid EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) is required to use TaxTC’s products. TaxTC does not provide EFINs. For information on how to obtain your EFIN, visit the FAQ’s page on the IRS website.
